Time to Trim Conifer Hedges

Now is a good time to trim conifer hedges because they will stop growing soon as the weather gets colder. (Although you may want to give them a final shave in a few weeks to ensure they stay looking nice throughout the winter.) Now is also a good time to take cuttings if you’d like to grow new plantlings.

It’s important to remember that with conifer hedges, with the exception of yew trees (Taxus baccata), you should never give an extreme trim back to old wood, because old wood does not produce new growth. Trimming little and often is the key to creating a tidy conifer hedge with a good shape and manageable height.
