Things to do in the Garden in October:

As the days shorten and weather turns colder, here’s a list of key things to do in your garden this month:

  • Rake up fallen leaves and pile them up to make leaf mold
  • Trim evergreen hedges, like yew.
  • Plant spring bulbs, like tulips and dafs.
  • Clear up the garden of debris.
  • Prune tall shrubs and climbing roses.
  • Plant new perennials and divide older ones.
  • Plant new climbers, like clematis.
  • Cut down the dying tops of perennial vegetables
  • Dig over empty areas of soil
  • Keep an eye out for pests and diseases. Diseased material can be burned or binned, but don’t compost it.
  • Tidy ponds and remove pumps for winter
